Beginn: 15. Oktober 2007
"And if you should meet a poor old woman like me anywhere in the world, then give her my greetings."
A seminar about how the lyrical and the narrative are the only means a small culture has to make itself heard on equal terms in dialogue with the big world. This theme will be explored by looking at how both old and modern Icelandic writing, music and visual arts have incorporated/scavanged international trends - and how the resulting works have been received once they make it abroad. We will also discuss examples of how the historical/factual Iceland has been represented in foreign literature and art, from Jules Verne to Roni Horn.
(The title is a Quote from Brekukotsannáll, The Fish Can Sing or Das Fischkonzert by Halldór Laxness.)
