Modern and Contemporary Egyptian Literature: Streams of Opposition
This seminar series is oriented towards the analysis of the politics, structures, styles, images and issues, in a perspective that compares between the Egyptian novels and short stories of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and those of the nineties. A special focus on the New Writing, and on the female writers will take place under the title of Streams of Opposition, as well as examinations of their representative texts in Arabic, and in translations to English, German and French.
These seminars will be effectively linked with an overview of the contemporary Egyptian culture, society and politics, and a glimpse of Egyptian history. There will also be reference to the important critical essays dealing with the literary issues brought up. The writings of Naguib Mahfouz, Youssef Idris, Mahmoud el Wardany, Mohamed ElBosaty, Ibrahim Aslan, Radwa Ashour, May Telemissany, Montasser ElQaffash, Mostafa Zekry, Somayya Ramadan and Nora Amin, will constitute a main research area for the lectures.
